Turtle Talk

Family Conversation App • 2024 • iOS

Turtle Talk is a mobile app designed to bring families together through meaningful conversation. In a world of screens and distractions, we wanted to create something that helps parents and kids actually talk to each other about things that matter.

The concept is simple: open the app, get a thought-provoking question, and start talking. No accounts, no tracking, no complexity. Just questions that spark real conversations.

The Problem

Research shows that families are spending less quality time together. Dinner conversations often default to "how was school?" and "fine." Parents want to connect with their kids on a deeper level but often don't know what to ask or how to start those conversations.

"The questions in Turtle Talk opened up conversations we never would have had otherwise. My 8-year-old told me things about her day I would have never known to ask about."

Design Approach

We designed Turtle Talk to be as simple as possible. The turtle mascot gives the app personality without being childish—it appeals to kids while not alienating parents. Questions are carefully curated across age ranges and topics, from silly ("If you could have any superpower for one day...") to serious ("What's something you're worried about?").

The interface gets out of the way. Large, readable text. Bright, friendly colors that change with each question to keep things fresh. A simple swipe to get a new question. That's it.

Outcome

Turtle Talk launched in beta with 50 families. The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. Parents report having longer, more meaningful conversations with their kids. Kids ask to use the app at dinner time. Teachers have even started using it in classrooms.

The app is currently being refined for a full App Store launch, with plans to add features like favoriting questions, tracking conversation streaks, and allowing families to submit their own questions.
